GTN meets culture “Games for future experiences”

On 16.11.22, representatives from the fields of media and cultural studies, game development, museums, and related cultural institutions in the NRW region met with the partners of the Games Technology Network project to integrate game technologies from different perspectives into museum practice and thereby initiate an exchange between science, game studios, and cultural institutions. On the part of CGL this was once again a nice occasion to show our Virtual Bauhaus VR environment!

The GTN workshop aimed to network research institutions with cultural institutions and to advance game development in NRW as well as underlying technologies, thus strengthening NRW as a business location.

In addition to the exchange of experiences and lively discussions, the participants gained insight into the research activities of the four universities. They were allowed to test the live demonstrations on-site.

For the eleventh time, the Clash of Realities international research conference is providing the opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange and dialogue. Experts from the academy, science and research, economics, politics, and the game industry will discuss pressing questions concerning the artistic design, technological development, and social perception of digital games, as well as the spreading of games literacy.

The conference welcomes scholars, social scientists, game developers, specialists in education and media, up-and-coming creative talents, students, and all those interested in and excited by digital games.

This year, however, some things are different than in the past. As we all know, health and safety measures during the Covid-19 pandemic prevent us from meeting in person. Therefore, we split the conference into two parts. The first one, which will take place from November 18-19, 2020, will be completely online.

Each of the summits will give a unique online presentation about pressing topics in game studies, media and education, game development, new technologies, and game entrepreneurship and discuss these topics with an enthusiastic online audience. This year’s conference – as well as the second part next year – is co-organized by the Cologne Game Lab, TH Köln – University of Applied Science – and the Department for Media Culture and Theater at the University of Cologne.

Corona had a lasting impact on the conference!

Under the title "Motivation, Expectation, Innovation," my colleague Klaus Gasteier and I have put together a compact Game Development Summit - the speakers were Prof. Dr. Sonia Fizek (CGL), Johannes Roth (Mimimi Games) and Christoph Safferling (Ubisoft Bluebyte).

Who plays which games when, what types of players are there, what is the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation to play games and, above all, how can these questions, which represent only a part of the associated spectrum of topics, be incorporated into the development of digital games. This year, we would like to approach the topic of player motivation from different perspectives in order to offer an overview within the framework of the Clash of Realities, which, as usual, spans the arc from (artistic) practice to scientific discourse.
